Your primary Google Business Profile category should finish the sentence "This business is a ___", using the most specific option Google offers. Add only the categories that describe other real parts of your business. Category names change by country, so search inside your own profile rather than copying a list from someone else.

Why the primary category matters
Google says the category helps you show up for related searches. A profile with "Pizza restaurant" as its primary category may appear for "Restaurants", "Italian Restaurants" or "Pizza" (Google Business Profile Help, checked Oct 2026).
Categories also unlock features. Google's help gives examples: restaurants can add menu, order and reservation links, health and beauty businesses can add a booking button and services, and hotels can show class ratings and amenities.
Local SEO practitioners rate the primary category as the top ranking factor in Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, with additional categories at number 8 (Whitespark, checked Oct 2026). That's a survey of opinion. Google doesn't publish ranking weights.
How to choose your primary category
- Write one sentence. "This business is a ___." Fill in what you'd say to a stranger, not your best-selling service.
- Type it into the category box in your profile and read the suggestions. Google only accepts names from its list.
- Pick the most specific one that's still true. "Dentist" fits a general practice. "Pediatric dentist" fits only if children are your main patients.
- Check the top three businesses in Maps for your main search. The category under each name is their primary category.
- Don't pick a service as a category. Google says categories describe what the business is, not the services or amenities it offers. Services go in the Services section.
How to choose additional categories
Google's guidance is to add categories for special departments or services and not to add one for every product (Google Business Profile Help). Its example: a grocery store with a bakery and a deli uses "Grocery store" as primary, with "Bakery" and "Deli" as additional categories.
- Add a category when it describes a real, regular part of what customers come to you for.
- Leave it out when it describes a single service, a brand you don't own, or a business that shares your building.
- If a location has two unrelated businesses, Google wants two profiles with different names, not one profile with both categories.
The advice differs on how many to add. Whitespark encourages adding all nine because categories decide which services you can list. Google says to use as few as possible. A sensible middle path is to add every category that's true of your business and none that are a stretch.
Examples for India and US businesses
The names below were checked against PlePer's category lists for India and the US (checked Oct 2026). The same business type sometimes has a different name in each list, so confirm the exact wording in your own profile.
| Business | Primary category to consider | Additional categories to consider (only if true) | Name differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dental practice | Dentist | Dental clinic, Cosmetic dentist, Orthodontist, Emergency dental service | US list also has Pediatric dentist |
| Skin or hair clinic | Dermatologist | Skin care clinic, Hair transplantation clinic | Same in both lists |
| GP or multi-doctor clinic | India: Medical centre. US: Medical clinic | Doctor, General practitioner | India list uses "Medical centre", US list uses "Medical clinic" |
| Physio | India: Physiotherapist. US: Physical therapy clinic | Physical therapy clinic (India) | "Physiotherapist" is only in the India list |
| Salon | India: Hairdresser or Beauty salon. US: Hair salon | Beauty salon, Nail salon, Barber shop | "Hair salon" is only in the US list |
| Restaurant | The cuisine, e.g. Indian restaurant, South Indian restaurant | Vegetarian restaurant, Cafe, Caterer | Same in both lists |

How to see your competitors' categories
- Google Maps: the primary category shows under each business name.
- Additional categories don't show in Maps. Chrome extensions such as GMB Everywhere and GMBspy display them, and PlePer shows the categories of businesses that rank for a keyword. These are third-party tools. Check that they still work with the current Maps layout before you rely on them.
- Look at the top three to five profiles for your main search in your own area. Results in another city may differ.
When to change a category, and what to expect
- Google says adding or editing a category may mean you have to verify again. Change one category at a time, so you can tell which edit caused any change in calls or rankings.
- Whitespark suggests checking for new categories every six months, and switching the primary category with the season for businesses like HVAC (cooling in summer, heating in winter).
- Don't swap categories often to chase rankings. Several big edits in a row make it hard to see what caused a drop, and a profile that doesn't follow the guidelines can be suspended. If that happens, see Google Business Profile suspended: how to fix and appeal.
Put a category check into your weekly Google Business Profile routine once a quarter. For what to post once categories are set, see our Google Business Profile post ideas.
How BeeCMO helps
Guard Bee drafts replies to every Google review, lines up review requests and writes a weekly post for your profile. You approve each one before it goes live. It doesn't change your categories: that's a decision for you. See Guard Bee.
Frequently asked questions
How many categories can a Google Business Profile have?
One primary and, according to Whitespark, up to 9 additional. Google's own help doesn't state a number and says to use as few as possible.
Can I create a custom category?
No. You have to choose from Google's list. If nothing fits exactly, pick the closest broader category and describe the details in your services and business description.
Does changing my primary category affect my ranking?
It can, because the category decides which searches you're considered for. Google may also ask you to verify again after the change.
Why can't I find a category I saw on another profile?
Category names vary by country and language. A category shown on a US profile may have a different name, or not exist, in the India list.
Should my category include my city or a keyword?
No. Categories come from a fixed list, and keywords don't belong in your business name either. Your address or service area sets the location.
