An AI receptionist answers the phone and talks to the caller. Missed-call text-back lets the call go unanswered, then texts the caller within seconds so the conversation moves to messages. If most of your callers need an answer on the spot, such as booking or emergencies, an AI receptionist fits better. If you mainly need to stop losing callers while you're busy, text-back is cheaper and simpler. Many businesses end up running both.
One thing to know up front: BeeCMO does not have a voice agent. Messenger Bee does missed-call text-back and message replies. We'll say where a voice product is the better pick.
What each one does
| AI receptionist | Missed-call text-back | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when someone calls | Software answers and talks to them | The call rings out or goes to voicemail, then a text goes out |
| What the caller gets | A spoken answer, a booking or a transfer | A text asking what they need |
| Best for | Booking calls, after-hours emergencies, FAQs on hours and prices | Busy trades and solo owners who can't pick up mid-job |
| Where it goes wrong | Unusual questions, strong accents, callers who hate bots | Callers who wanted to talk, landlines that can't get texts |
| Setup | Script, FAQ, call routing, calendar link, testing | Forward missed calls, write one message, register for texting |
| Rules to watch (US) | Call recording consent, AI voice rules on outbound calls | A2P 10DLC, consent, STOP handling |

What they cost: published prices
All prices are each vendor's monthly price from its own pricing page, checked 25 October 2026. Plans change often, so check the page before you buy.
| Service | Type | Entry price | What's included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rosie | AI receptionist | $49/month | 250 minutes |
| Goodcall | AI receptionist | $79/month | 100 unique customers, then 79¢ each |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | AI receptionist | $0, then $150/month Pro | 25 calls free; Pro starts at 75 calls |
| Ruby | Human receptionists | $250/month | 50 minutes |
| Messenger Bee by BeeCMO | Text-back and message replies, no voice | $29/month | Missed-call text-back on US, Canadian and Australian numbers, plus WhatsApp, forms and lead ads in one inbox |
Two things the headline price leaves out:
- How usage is counted. Rosie counts minutes, Goodcall counts unique customers, Smith.ai counts calls. A busy season can push you into overage.
- Texting costs and registration. US text-back needs A2P 10DLC registration before messages flow. Fees and approval time are in A2P 10DLC explained.

When an AI receptionist is the better choice
- Callers expect a live answer. Emergency plumbing at 2 am or a dental patient in pain wants a voice, not a text.
- Much of your call volume is the same few questions: hours, location, whether you take their insurance, how to book.
- You take bookings by phone and your calendar can connect to the receptionist.
- Many callers are on landlines, or are older customers who don't text.
- You have a front desk that's often overloaded, and you want overflow handled.
When missed-call text-back is the better choice
- You're a solo owner or small crew, on jobs most of the day.
- Most callers just want a quote or a call back, and are happy to type a few details.
- You want a written record of what the customer asked, to read between jobs.
- Your budget is tight, or you don't want to write and test a full call script.
- Your customers already text or WhatsApp you more than they call.
Running both
You don't have to choose. One setup that covers most gaps:
- A person answers during business hours.
- Calls nobody answers go to the AI receptionist, or to voicemail.
- If the caller hangs up before speaking to anyone, a text goes out within seconds.
- Every lead, from calls, texts, WhatsApp or web forms, lands in one inbox, so nobody gets two follow-ups or none.
The last step matters most. Two systems that don't share a lead list will double-message some customers and miss others.
The rules in the US
Texting
- The TCPA (47 U.S.C. § 227, checked Oct 2026) governs automated calls and texts. Replying to someone's enquiry is treated differently from marketing, but keep text-back messages free of promotions and honor STOP right away.
- Carriers require A2P 10DLC registration for business texting from a regular local number. See A2P 10DLC explained and the lesson on TCPA texting rules.
Recording calls
- Federal law lets a call be recorded with one party's consent (18 U.S.C. § 2511(2)(d), checked Oct 2026).
- Some states require consent from everyone on the call. California is one (California Penal Code § 632, checked Oct 2026).
- Most AI receptionists record or transcribe calls. The simple fix is to announce it at the start of every call. Ask your vendor how it does this.
AI voices on outbound calls
In February 2024, the FCC ruled that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" voices under the TCPA (FCC, checked Oct 2026). That ruling is about calls the AI places, so an AI receptionist that only answers inbound calls is a different case. If your AI receptionist also makes outbound calls, such as reminders or follow-ups, the TCPA's consent rules for artificial-voice calls apply. Get legal advice before switching that on.
India: missed calls go to WhatsApp
- Commercial SMS in India may only be sent using registered headers, with content templates registered with the telecom operators (TRAI press release, 2023, checked Oct 2026).
- Messenger Bee doesn't offer SMS or missed-call text-back in India for that reason. The practical alternative is to ask callers to message you on WhatsApp. Put your WhatsApp number on your Google Business Profile, your voicemail greeting and your ads.
- WhatsApp messages from a business have their own rules on opt-in and templates. See WhatsApp marketing rules in India.
How BeeCMO helps
Messenger Bee texts back US, Canadian and Australian callers you missed within seconds, and puts the reply in one inbox with your WhatsApp chats, website form, lead ads, Instagram DMs and, in India, IndiaMART and Justdial enquiries. It asks your qualifying questions and alerts you when a lead is hot. It doesn't answer calls by voice, and voice callbacks aren't built yet. If you need a voice agent, pair one of the services above with Messenger Bee for everything that arrives as text. See Messenger Bee for details.
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI receptionist worth it for a small business?
It can be if many callers need a live answer or want to book by phone, and if your missed calls cost more than the monthly fee. Work out what missed calls cost first, then compare that with the plan's price at your real call volume.
What is the difference between an AI receptionist and an answering service?
An answering service such as Ruby uses human receptionists, who handle unusual calls better but cost more per minute. An AI receptionist is software that answers, follows a script, and books or transfers calls.
Can an AI receptionist replace missed-call text-back?
Partly. It answers most calls, but some callers hang up when they hear a bot or call when the line is busy. A text to those callers catches some of what the receptionist misses.
Is it legal to text people who called my business?
In the US, replying to someone's enquiry is generally treated differently from marketing texts. You still need A2P 10DLC registration, an opt-out line and no promotional content. Get advice from a lawyer before sending marketing texts.
Does missed-call text-back work in India?
Commercial SMS needs DLT registration in India, so the simpler route is to ask missed callers to WhatsApp you. Messenger Bee doesn't send SMS in India.
