To ask for Google reviews on WhatsApp, send every customer the same short message with your Google review link soon after the job, order or visit. Don't check their mood first, don't offer anything in return, and only message people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. Google's own help page suggests sharing your review link on WhatsApp, so the channel is fine. The rules are about who you ask and what you offer.
This guide is part of our Google Business Profile guide for Indian businesses. For other channels (SMS, email, QR cards), see how to get more Google reviews without breaking rules.
Why WhatsApp works for review requests in India
Your customers already message you on WhatsApp to confirm orders, share addresses and ask for bills. A review request in that same chat reads as the next step of the conversation.
Google agrees on the channel. Its help page on review links suggests sharing the link or QR code by email, WhatsApp or a Facebook post, and putting it on receipts or a printed display (Google).
Google's rules: what you can and can't do
Google's user contributed content policy sets out what businesses may not do (Google contribution policy):
| Not allowed | What it looks like on WhatsApp |
|---|---|
| Offering incentives such as payment, discounts or free goods or services for a review | "Leave a 5-star review and get 10% off your next visit" |
| Offering anything to change or remove a negative review | "We'll refund ₹500 if you edit your review" |
| Discouraging or prohibiting negative reviews | "Please only review us if you're happy" |
| Selectively asking for positive reviews | Sending the link only to customers who rated you 4 or 5 |
| Pressuring customers to review while on the premises | Staff holding a phone at the counter until the review is posted |
| Asking staff to collect a set number of reviews, or reviews with specific content | "Each technician must get 10 reviews mentioning 'best AC service'" |
Google does allow businesses to ask for genuine reviews, as long as there's no incentive and no attempt to steer the rating or the words. Its help page on reviews also says a mix of positive and negative reviews often feels more trustworthy (Google).
What review gating is, and why it's out
Review gating means checking how a customer feels before deciding whether to send the Google link. A typical WhatsApp version:
- "How was your experience with us? Reply 1 to 5."
- Customers who reply 4 or 5 get the Google review link.
- Customers who reply 1 to 3 get a "Sorry, tell us more" form instead.
That's selectively asking for positive reviews, which Google's policy prohibits. The fix is simple: send the same link to everyone. If you want private feedback too, ask for it separately, and never make the Google link depend on the answer.
Indian and other rules to know
- India: BIS published IS 19000:2022 on online consumer reviews. It covers businesses that collect reviews from their own customers and says purchased reviews can't be published. It's voluntary, though the government said it would consider making it mandatory if fake reviews continue (Business Today).
- US customers: the FTC's rule on fake reviews took effect on 21 October 2024. The FTC says the rule itself doesn't specifically ban asking only happy customers, but that doing so could still break the FTC Act under its Endorsement Guides (FTC).
WhatsApp's own rules: consent and opt-out
WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy says you may contact people on WhatsApp only if they've given you their number and you've received opt-in permission to message them (WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy). It also says:
- you must respect any request, on or off WhatsApp, to block, stop or opt out;
- outside the 24-hour customer service window, which opens with each customer message, API users can only send approved message templates.
In practice:
- Collect consent at the point of sale. Add one line to your bill, booking form or job card: "We'll send your bill and service updates on WhatsApp." Keep a note of who agreed.
- Reply inside the chat when you can. If the customer messaged you today (to confirm a slot or share a photo), your review request fits naturally in that conversation.
- Honour "stop" immediately. If someone says "no more messages" or "band karo", remove them from every list.

WhatsApp Business app vs API
- WhatsApp Business app: you type or paste the message yourself, one customer at a time. Save the templates below as quick replies.
- WhatsApp Business API: messages outside the 24-hour window must use an approved template. Meta's guidelines say feedback requests about a specific order, transaction or interaction can qualify as utility, but a general or generic feedback request won't be approved as utility, and a survey with promotional content is marketing (Meta for Developers). Mention the actual order or visit in the template.
When to send the WhatsApp review request
Ask when the customer has felt the result, not before.
| Business | When to send |
|---|---|
| AC repair, pest control, plumbing | Same day, after the customer confirms the job is done |
| Salon or spa | 2 to 3 hours after the appointment |
| Restaurant or cloud kitchen | That evening, or the next morning |
| Clinic or dental practice | After the follow-up visit, not on the day of a painful procedure |
| Jeweller or furniture store | After delivery or collection |
| Coaching institute | After the first month, or after results |
| Online order | A few days after delivery, once they've used it |
Send one reminder after 3 or 4 days if there's no reply. After that, stop.
WhatsApp review request templates
Each template is an Illustrative example. Fill in the brackets and keep it short. Every customer gets the same message, whatever you think of their visit.

Hi [Name], just a gentle reminder in case you missed it. Your honest Google review for [Business] would help us a lot: [review link]. No worries if you're busy.
Phrases to avoid
- "Please give us 5 stars" (steers the rating)
- "Only review if you were happy" (discourages negative reviews)
- "Review us and get a free [anything]" (incentive)
- "Your review will help our technician get a bonus" (pressure tied to staff targets)
What to do when an unhappy customer replies
Sometimes a customer replies to the request with a complaint instead of reviewing, which gives you a chance to fix the problem.
- Thank them, apologise where it's deserved, and fix the problem.
- Don't ask them to hold off on a review, and don't offer anything for a better rating.
- If they post a negative review, reply calmly in public. Our guide on how to respond to negative Google reviews has 12 examples.
Getting your review link
On a computer, open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Get more reviews to copy the link or download the QR code (Google). Customers need a Google Account to post a review (Google). Our guide to finding your Google review link and QR code walks through each step. BeeCMO's free Google review link generator and review request message generator can help too.
How BeeCMO helps
- Guard Bee prepares a review request for every customer you add, sent by WhatsApp template to customers who opted in, by email, or by text (US and Canadian numbers) once you confirm the customer agreed to texts.
- There's no rating filter anywhere in the product. A request that tries to filter by rating or sentiment is rejected.
- Nothing goes out until you send it with one tap.
- Review sync and reply features need Google to approve our app's Business Profile API access, which is pending. They work once Google approves our app. See Guard Bee and pricing.
FAQ
Is it allowed to ask for Google reviews on WhatsApp?
Yes. Google's help page suggests sharing your review link by WhatsApp. What's not allowed is asking only happy customers, discouraging negative reviews or offering anything in return.
Is "rate us 1 to 5 first" on WhatsApp review gating?
It is if only the high ratings get the Google link. That's selectively asking for positive reviews, which Google's policy prohibits. Send the same link to every customer.
Can I offer a discount on the next visit for a Google review?
No. Google prohibits payment, discounts and free goods or services in exchange for a review, including for changing or removing a negative one.
Do I need consent to send a review request on WhatsApp?
Yes. WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy says you need the person's number and their opt-in before messaging them, and you must respect any request to stop.
Is a WhatsApp review request a utility or marketing template?
Meta says a feedback request tied to a specific order or interaction can be utility, but a generic feedback request won't be approved as utility, and one with promotional content is marketing.
