Google Business Profile Suspended? How to Fix and Appeal

By BeeCMO teamPublished · 7 min read

If your Google Business Profile is suspended, find the guideline you broke, fix it on the profile, then file one appeal in Google's appeals tool with documents that show your business name and address. Don't create a new profile for the same business. Google says appeal decisions can take up to 5 business days.

Suspended, disabled or restricted: what's the difference?

Google's help uses "suspended" and "disabled" side by side and doesn't define the difference. It uses "restricted" for Google Accounts: a restricted account suspends every profile it manages, and you can't create or claim profiles until it's lifted (Google Business Profile Help).

Local SEO practitioners use a working split (BrightLocal, checked Oct 2026):

What you seeCommon nameWhat it usually means
Profile still shows on Maps, but you can't edit itSoft suspension (often "disabled")Your access is cut off, the listing stays public
Profile is gone from Google MapsHard suspensionThe listing is removed from public view
Several profiles go down at onceAccount restrictionThe problem is with the Google Account, not one profile

To check, search your business name in Google Maps while signed out. Then open the appeals tool, which shows the date, reason and policy behind each decision.

Common causes, from Google's guidelines

Each of these comes from Google's guidelines for representing your business (checked Oct 2026):

  1. Virtual office or mailbox address. Google says a virtual office "isn't eligible", and P.O. boxes or remote mailboxes aren't acceptable.
  2. Coworking desk without signage. A coworking office counts only with clear signage, staff present and customers received during business hours.
  3. Extra words in the business name. Taglines, service descriptions, phone numbers, URLs and location details aren't allowed. "Sharma Dental Clinic" is fine. "Sharma Dental Clinic Best Dentist in Ahmedabad" isn't.
  4. Showing an address you don't serve customers at. Service-area businesses should hide their address and set a service area. Google's guidance is that the area shouldn't extend beyond about two hours' drive from your base.
  5. Duplicate profiles. One profile per location. A second profile for the same address, or one per specialisation for a doctor or lawyer, breaks the rules.
  6. Phone or website that isn't yours or isn't local. The number must be under your direct control and connect to that location. Links that redirect, including to social media pages, aren't allowed.
  7. Wrong hours. List the hours customers can reach you. BrightLocal gives "open 24 hours" when you aren't as one example of a suspension trigger.

BrightLocal also says many suspensions come from automated sweeps that are hard to pin to one edit. A big change to name, address or category is often what puts a profile in front of a review, so compare the decision date with your recent edits.

How to fix and appeal, step by step

From Google's help pages (fix suspended profiles, appeals, checked Oct 2026):

  1. Don't create a new profile. Google's help says not to create a second profile for the same business, and it would break the one-profile-per-location rule.
  2. Read the decision in the appeals tool: the date, reason and linked policy, and whether it can be appealed.
  3. Fix the cause on the profile, using the list above.
  4. Gather evidence whose business name and address match the profile exactly.
  5. Open the appeals tool, sign in with the account linked to the profile, select the profile and the decision.
  6. Upload your files and explain in a few plain sentences why the profile meets the guidelines.
  7. Submit once. Don't file a second appeal for the same issue before you get a decision.
  8. Watch your email. The tool's status will read Submitted, Approved, Not Approved, Can't be appealed or Eligible for appeal.

If your account is restricted, appeal on your Google Account's My accounts page first. Managing more than 10 profiles? Google asks for a bulk appeal with a spreadsheet of Business Profile IDs.

What evidence to gather

Google's evidence typeIndia examplesUS examples
Business registrationGST registration certificate, Udyam registration, company incorporation certificateState business registration, articles of organization
Business licenceShop and establishment licence, clinic registrationCity or county business licence, contractor licence
Tax certificatesGST certificate in the business nameIRS EIN letter
Utility billsElectricity, phone or internet bill at the business addressSame

Google names the four evidence types. The examples are common documents in each country that fall into those types, not a list Google publishes. A shopfront photo showing permanent signage helps when the issue is your address.

How long does an appeal take?

Google says "appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days" (Google Business Profile Help, checked Oct 2026). If the appeal is denied, you can ask for another review with new evidence. Businesses in the UK and EEA have extra routes, including out-of-court dispute bodies under the EU Digital Services Act for EEA businesses.

When a profile is reinstated, Google says it comes back with its owner and managers. Check your reviews, photos and hours afterwards and correct anything that's missing.

India and US notes

  • India: Beauticians, tutors and repair services who travel to customers' homes are service-area businesses. Hide the home address and set the areas you cover. A coworking address counts only with signage and staff there during business hours, and a virtual office doesn't count at all (see the causes above).
  • India: Make sure the name on your GST certificate matches the profile name, or explain the difference (a trade name, for example) in your appeal.
  • US: Contractors such as plumbers and HVAC companies should hide their address unless customers visit. Keep the service area within Google's two-hour guidance.
  • Both: Keep your name, address and phone the same on your website and directories, so the evidence and the web agree. Our lesson on NAP consistency and citations covers which listings to fix.

How BeeCMO helps

Guard Bee replies to your Google reviews, sends review requests and drafts a weekly post, and you approve each one before it goes live. It never edits your business name, address or categories. Google requires a profile to be verified for at least 60 days before its API can connect, so Guard Bee can't help with a brand-new or suspended profile until it's back. See Guard Bee.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended without warning?

Google doesn't always say which edit caused it. Open the appeals tool to see the reason and policy, then check your name, address, phone, hours and any duplicate profiles against Google's guidelines.

Should I create a new profile if mine is suspended?

No. Google's help says not to create a new profile for the same business. Fix the issue and appeal the existing one.

How long does it take to get a suspended profile back?

Google says appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days. If the appeal is denied, you can request another review with new evidence.

Do I lose my reviews when my profile is suspended?

Google says a reinstated profile is restored with its owner and managers. Check your reviews after reinstatement and contact Google support if any are missing.

Can a service-area business show its home address?

No. Google says service-area businesses should hide their address from customers and set a service area instead.
