Local SEO for a service-area business comes down to four things. Hide your address on Google Business Profile if customers don't come to you. List up to 20 real service areas within about 2 hours' drive. Build one useful page per service on your website, not one thin page per suburb. And get a steady flow of honest reviews from every job. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and each step helps one of those.
This guide is part of our Google Business Profile guide for Indian businesses.
What counts as a service-area business
Google's guidelines describe a service-area business as one that visits or delivers to customers instead of serving them at its own address (Google guidelines). Examples in India:
- AC and HVAC repair, appliance service, RO water purifier service
- Pest control, deep cleaning, sofa cleaning
- Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, interior contractors
- Packers and movers
- Home tutors, yoga trainers, physiotherapists, nurses and labs offering home sample collection
- Doctors and clinics doing home visits
Google gives three setups (Google):
| Setup | Address shown? | Service areas? | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storefront | Yes | No | A dental clinic patients visit |
| Service-area business | No | Yes | Pest control run from a godown customers never visit |
| Hybrid | Yes | Yes | A physiotherapy clinic that also does home visits |
Google says a hybrid needs a location that's staffed and can receive customers during its stated hours, with permanent signage. Businesses without that should be listed as service-area businesses (Google).
Step 1: Hide your address the right way
Google's guidance is direct: if you don't serve customers at your business address, remove the address from your Business Profile (Google). Its guidelines give the example of a plumber who runs the business from home and should clear the address (Google guidelines).
Points that matter in India:
- Home-run businesses: clear the address from the profile, as in Google's plumber example.
- Virtual offices and co-working mail addresses: Google says rented mailboxes or addresses where you don't operate aren't eligible. Don't use them to look local in another city.
- One profile per business: Google wants a single profile per business. Don't make a separate profile for each city you cover.
Hiding the address doesn't remove you from Google. Google says your service area helps people find your Business Profile (Google).
Verification without a shopfront
Google decides which verification methods you see (Google). For a video verification, Google asks you to show your location, your products or the tools you use to serve customers, and proof that you manage the business. A service business can show its branded van or bike, tools, uniforms and a job card or invoice book. Have them ready before you start.
Step 2: Set service areas you really cover
From Edit profile > Location > Service area, add the places you serve (Google). The rules:
- Up to 20 service areas.
- Cities, PIN codes or other areas. You can't set a radius around your base.
- About 2 hours' drive at most from where you're based, across the whole area. Google words this as guidance, not a hard cap.
- Approved edits can take up to 48 hours to appear.
Illustrative example: An AC service company based in Wakad, Pune, adds Wakad, Hinjewadi, Baner, Aundh, Pimple Saudagar, Ravet, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Balewadi: places its technicians reach the same day. It doesn't add Mumbai just because a few customers have called from there.
Do service areas help ranking?
Google doesn't say service areas improve ranking. It says they help people find your profile (Google). Its ranking page lists distance as a factor, and you can't change where your base is (Google). So expect to rank most easily near your base, and use your website and reviews to compete further out.
Step 3: Get the rest of the profile right
- Business name: your real-world name only. Google doesn't allow extra keywords or locations, so "Cool Breeze Services" is fine and "Cool Breeze AC Repair Pune Best Service" is not (Google guidelines).
- Primary category: the most specific one, such as "Air conditioning repair service" or "Pest control service". See how to choose Google Business Profile categories.
- Services: add each service from Google's suggestions or as a custom service, with a short description. Google rejects custom services with prices or phone numbers in the name (Google).
- Hours: the hours someone answers the phone. Add special hours for festivals.
- Photos: real jobs, your team and your vehicles, with customers' permission and no house numbers in frame.
Clinics and doctors doing home visits
Google treats doctors as individual practitioners. A public-facing practitioner may have their own profile, but shouldn't have several profiles for different specialisations (Google guidelines). A clinic that also does home visits is usually a hybrid: show the clinic address and add the areas the home-visit team covers.
Step 4: Build service pages, not doorway pages
Your website is where you can rank beyond your base, and where the person who found you on Maps checks if you're serious.
Service pages
Make one page for each main service: "Split AC repair", "Termite treatment", "Bathroom waterproofing". Each page should cover:
- what the service includes and what it doesn't;
- the areas you cover, listed in plain text;
- how booking, visits and payment work (UPI, card, cash);
- your warranty or re-visit policy, if you have one;
- real photos from jobs;
- an FAQ in the words customers use on the phone.
Area pages, carefully
Google's spam policies name "doorway abuse", including multiple pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page (Google Search Central). Thirty pages that differ only in the city name fit that description.
An area page is worth having when it holds something specific to that area:
- jobs you've done there (with permission);
- how quickly you reach it;
- local issues, such as hard water in one area or termite trouble in older buildings in another;
- reviews from customers there.
If you can't write that, list the area on your main service page instead.
Structured data
Google's LocalBusiness structured data documentation lists address and name as required properties and doesn't mention service areas (Google Search Central). Google also says it doesn't guarantee rich results from markup. Use it accurately, but don't expect it to replace a well-built profile.
Step 5: Reviews from every job
Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking (Google). For a service business, every completed job is a chance to ask.
- Ask after the customer confirms it works. For AC repair, that's when the room is cooling. For pest control, it may be after the follow-up visit.
- Ask everyone. Google prohibits selectively asking for positive reviews and offering anything in exchange for one (Google contribution policy).
- Don't set technician quotas. Google's policy bans asking staff to collect a certain number of reviews.
- Use WhatsApp. Most Indian customers share their number when they book. See how to ask for Google reviews on WhatsApp for templates.
- Reply to every review. Name the service and area naturally where it fits, without stuffing keywords. Our Google review reply templates help.
For a trade-specific system, see how HVAC companies get more Google reviews.
Step 6: Keep the profile active
- Post weekly: a job of the week, a seasonal tip ("service your AC before summer"), or a dated offer. The 12 Google Business Profile post examples are written for home services.
- Update hours before every festival and holiday.
- Check your profile once a month to make sure the phone number, hours and service areas are still right.

How BeeCMO helps
- Guard Bee prepares a review request for every completed job and drafts a reply to each new review, with no rating filter. Replies to 1 to 3-star reviews always wait for your approval on WhatsApp.
- It drafts a weekly Business Profile post from your offers and the season.
- Google Business Profile features work once Google approves our app's API access, which is pending.
- Scout Bee audits your website, reads Search Console, and checks before writing a new page whether you already rank for the topic, so you don't build competing service pages.
- See Guard Bee, Scout Bee for SEO and AI search and pricing.
FAQ
Should a service-area business hide its address on Google?
Yes, if customers don't come to that address. Google says to remove the address from your Business Profile when you don't serve customers there, and to add service areas instead.
How many service areas can I add on Google Business Profile?
Up to 20. You can use cities, PIN codes or other areas, but not a radius, and Google suggests keeping the whole area within about 2 hours' drive of your base.
Does hiding my address hurt my Google Maps ranking?
Google doesn't say it does. It lists relevance, distance and prominence as the main ranking factors, and says service areas help people find your profile.
Can I create a Business Profile for each city I serve?
No. Google wants one profile per business. Use service areas on one profile, and build service pages on your website.
Are city landing pages bad for SEO?
Pages that differ only by city name and funnel visitors to one page are what Google's spam policies call doorway abuse. An area page with real local content, such as jobs, response times and reviews from that area, is a different matter.
