How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Breaking Rules)
The short answer: ask every customer, at the moment they're happiest, with a direct link, and make it one tap. Most businesses with few reviews don't have unhappy customers. They just don't ask, or they ask in a way that takes five steps. This guide covers when to ask, how to ask in India and the US, ten request messages you can copy, and the rules that get reviews removed.
For the legal background in more depth, see the lesson on asking for reviews legally. If you run an HVAC company, our HVAC review guide has trade-specific timing.
Why recent reviews matter
From BrightLocal's 2026 survey of US consumers (BrightLocal 2026, via PinMeTo, checked Oct 2026):
- 74% look for reviews written in the last three months.
- 80% are more likely to use a business that replies to all of its reviews.
- 31% will only use businesses rated 4.5 stars or higher.
Google says the same thing from its side: prominence in local results is based partly on how many reviews you have, and "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking" (Google Business Profile Help, checked Oct 2026). A steady flow of fresh reviews beats a burst once a year.
The rules first
Google's Maps content policy says businesses may not "discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive reviews from customers", and bans incentives for reviews (Google Maps user contributed content policy, checked Oct 2026). In the US, the FTC's rule on consumer reviews has been in force since 21 October 2024. It bans fake reviews, incentives tied to positive sentiment, and suppressing reviews through threats (FTC Q&A, checked Oct 2026).
In practice:
- Ask every customer, the same way. Sending the link only to people who said they were happy is review gating, and Google bans it.
- Offer nothing in return. No discount, no free dessert, no lucky draw entry, even for an honest review.
- Don't review yourself, and don't ask staff or family to. That counts as a conflict of interest.
- Never buy reviews or join review exchange groups.
You can thank staff whose names come up in reviews. Don't set a quota on how many requests each person sends: Google lists that as prohibited too.
Step 1: get your review link and QR code
A direct link opens the review form in one tap. Google gives you both the link and a QR code in your Business Profile; our guide on how to get your Google review link and QR code walks through it. To turn the link into a printable counter card, use our free Google review link and QR code generator. It runs in your browser and asks for no sign-up.
Step 2: pick the moment
Ask when the customer has just felt the benefit:
- Home services: within an hour of the job being closed, or the morning after an install.
- Clinics: the day after the visit, with wording that names no treatment.
- Restaurants and cafes: the next morning, or with a QR card on the table or bill folder.
- Salons: a few hours after the appointment, once the client has seen the look at home.
- Shops and services: with the receipt or delivery confirmation.
Pick one trigger in your workflow, such as a job marked complete or a bill paid, and send the request from there. Asking by hand falls apart on your busiest days, which are the days with the most happy customers.
Step 3: pick the channel your customers read
- India: WhatsApp, to customers who have opted in to messages from you.
- US: a text message. Business texting needs A2P 10DLC registration and the customer's consent, plus an opt-out line such as "Reply STOP to opt out". See A2P 10DLC explained.
- Everywhere: email as a follow-up, and a QR code for walk-in customers.
Send one reminder at most, a few days later. A second one starts to feel like pressure.
Ten review request messages you can copy
Replace the names and paste your own link. Every one of these goes to every customer, so none of them is gating.
- WhatsApp, after a visit: "Thank you for visiting Sharma Dental Clinic today. If you have a minute, a Google review helps other families find us: [link]"
- WhatsApp, after a delivery: "Your order from Kala Handicrafts was delivered today. We hope you love it. A Google review would mean a lot to our small team: [link]"
- WhatsApp, in Hinglish: "Aaj aane ke liye shukriya! Agar aapko hamari service achhi lagi, toh ek Google review zaroor dein: [link]"
- Text, after a repair: "Hi Dana, it's Mike's Heating & Air. Thanks for having Luis out today. If you have a minute, a Google review helps neighbors find us: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out."
- Text, the morning after an install: "Hi Raj, hope the new system kept you comfortable last night. If anything isn't right, reply here and we'll fix it. If you're happy, we'd be grateful for a Google review: [link]"
- Text, salon: "Thanks for visiting Glow Studio today. If you love your new look, a quick Google review helps us a lot: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out."
- Email subject and body: "How did we do?" / "Thanks again for choosing us. Reviews from customers like you are how most people find a business they can trust. It takes about a minute: [link]"
- Restaurant table card: "Enjoyed your meal? Scan to leave us a Google review. It takes 30 seconds."
- Receipt or invoice line: "Happy with us? Leave a Google review: [short link or QR]"
- Reminder, three days later: "Hi Priya, just a gentle reminder in case you missed our message. If you have a moment, here's the link for a Google review: [link]. Thank you either way."

Step 4: reply to every review
Replying is part of getting reviews: people who see that you answer are more likely to write one. Google's guidance is to keep replies short and specific, avoid promotions, and never share private details (Google Business Profile Help, checked Oct 2026). Thank good reviews by name and mention what they mentioned. For bad ones, see how to respond to negative Google reviews, and for drafts in seconds, the free review reply generator.
Step 5: check the ratio every week
Count reviews against completed jobs, visits or orders each week. If the ratio drops, check the process before you blame anyone. Is the request still going out? Does the link still work? Is the message arriving too late?

Frequently asked questions
How can I get Google reviews fast?
There's no safe shortcut. Ask every customer you served in the last few weeks, with a direct link, then ask every new customer from now on. Buying reviews breaks Google's policy and, in the US, the FTC rule, and Google removes fake reviews.
Can I offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's policy bans incentives for reviews, even if you ask for an honest review of any rating.
Can I ask only happy customers?
No. Asking only customers you expect to be happy is review gating, which Google's policy prohibits. Send the same request to everyone.
Is it OK to send review requests on WhatsApp?
Yes, to customers who have opted in to messages from you. Keep it short, include your direct link, and send at most one reminder.
How many reviews do I need?
There's no magic number. What customers look at is how recent the reviews are, your rating, and whether you reply. A steady flow every month does more than a big batch once.
